Land & Water Conservation Fund - 2027
Good for: Parks, outdoor recreation areas, walking facilities, trails and related public recreation improvements.
Who can apply: Local governments and other eligible public entities.
Funding: 50/50 matching grant

Recreational Trails Program - 2027
Good for: new trails, trail improvements, trailheads and recreational trail facilities. This is one I definitely want our communities to see because it could support pieces of the active living and regional trail concepts I've been developing.

ODOT Lake & Recreation Access Program - FY2027
Good for: Resurfacing roads that provide access to lakes and recreational areas.
Who can apply: Cities and counties
Important: ODOT pays for resurfacing; the city/county prepares the base and drainage.
Deadline: March 1, 2027 Local Government Resource Center
ODOT Industrial Access Program
Good for: Road improvements that provide direct access to new or expanding industrial development and support jobs/economic growth.
Who should look at it: Communities and counties working with an industrial employer or development project.
Status: Applications available through ODOT. Local Government Resource Center
USDA Community Facilities Direct Loan & Grant Program
Good for: Essential rural community facilities and equipment. Eligible examples include street improvements, public works vehicles/equipment, public safety facilities, health facilities and other essential community facilities.
Who can apply: Public bodies, community-based nonprofits and federally recognized Tribes.
Community size: Generally rural communities of 20,000 or fewer for this program.
Status: Open year-round. Applications are processed October 1 - September 30. Smaller and lower-income communities receive priority for grant assistance. Community Facilities Direct Loan & Grant Program | Rural Development
EDA Public Works & Economic Adjustment Assistance
Good for: Infrastructure tied to economic development including transportation/ access infrastructure where it supports business development, job creation, industrial development or broader regional economic goals.
Who can apply: Eligible governmental, regional, Tribal and nonprofit economic development entities.
Status: Open rolling applications. There is currently no fixed application deadline; applications are accepted until the current NOFO is replaced, canceled, or funding is exhausted. Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP)
Good for: Sidewalks, ADA improvements, bicycle facilities, trails, Safe Routes to School, pedestrian safety and other transportation alternatives.
Who can apply: Local and Tribal governments, transit agencies, school districts, and certain eligible nonprofits.
Status: Watch for the next ODOT call for projects. Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP)
AARP Community Challenge
Good for: Small, quick projects including crosswalks, benches, walking improvements, bike facilities, transit access, public spaces and age friendly improvements.
The 2026 Flagship awards generally ranged from a few hundred dollars up to $15,000, and transportation/mobility was specifically eligible. the 2026 application period opened early in the year and closed March 4.
Status: Watch for the 2027 announcement. 2026 AARP Community Challenge
Oklahoma CDBG
Good for: Streets, sidewalks, drainage, public facilities and other eligible infrastructure improvements benefiting qualifying communities.
Who can apply: Generally, Oklahoma cities, towns and counties meeting program requirements.

USDA Rural Business Development Grants
Good For: Rural economic development planning, business support projects and certain infrastructure/economic development activities.
Who can apply: Public/government entities, federally recognized Tribes and nonprofits serving rural areas.
Status: 2026 closed June 30; watch for the next round. Rural Business Development Grants | Rural Development
FTA Section 5311 - Rural Public Transportation
Good for: Rural transit operations, vehicles, equipment, planning and transportation services in areas under 50,000 population.
How to access: Primarily through Oklahoma's state administered rural transit program rather than a community responding to a normal federal NOFO. Formula Grants for Rural Areas (Section 5311 ) | FTA
Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A)

BUILD Transportation Grants
Good for: Major roads, bridge, transit, rail and multimodal projects with significant local or regional impact. FY26 closed February 24, and selections have been announced. Better Utilizing Investments to Leverage Development (BUILD) Grant Program | US Department of Transportation
Bus & Bus Facilities/Low-No
Good for: buses, transit equipment, facilities and low/zero emission transit investments.

Oklahoma Highway Safety Office
Good for: data driven highway safety projects including impaired driving, occupant protection, pedestrian/bicycle safety, motorcycle safety and driver education. FFY27's application process is already underway; communities should watch for the next pre-application period. Applying for Funding
Municipal road Drilling Activity Fund
Good for oilfield related road damage in Oklahoma municipalities under 15,000. Up to $500,000; 25% match. FY27 applications closed September 30, 2026. Local Government Resource Center
